Rehabilitation & Remodel of Hillside School

The Rehabilitation & Remodel of Hillside School project is a structural retrofit and residential conversion of an historical school building in Berkeley, CA. The school was originally built in 1927. It sits on an active hill slide, and the Hayward Fault runs directly under the tower portion of the building. A substantial seismic retrofit involves placing a 2’-9” thick mat slab foundation under what will become the garage for the residence. Countless custom connection details are required due to framing techniques that do not meet current code requirements. When the project is complete, the tower portion of the building will serve as a private residence for the Owner, and the classroom areas will serve as an artist collective and display gallery. The property will truly blend in with Berkeley’s artist culture.
